Total sales rose 4.8% year on year to 111,695 million. Existing store sales edged up 0.8%, the first year-on-year increase since November 2003. Average daily sales per store were 484,000, while the average amount spent per customer rose 0.4% to 598. The average number of customers per store per day was 808, up 0.5% year on year.
In the rice dish category, hand-rolled rice balls performed well. Lawson launched a string of new products in an attempt to boost sales in this category, including Buta Suki Don (pork bowls) (450 yen), launched on March 30 as a substitute for beef bowls, and Salmon Harami and Squid Teriyaki Maku no Uchi, 630 yen-boxed lunches including Niigata Koshihikari rice and quality seafood, which went on sale on April 26. Unfortunately, these new product launches couldn't arrest the downward trend in sales in this product category.
The bakery category turned in another strong monthly performance on the back of new product launches and the revamp of popular products. The pasta lineup, which was revamped last month, was also a strong performer.
GU-GU-GU, a new series of instant food products launched on March 30 that redefines the term instant, sold extremely well, racking up more than 1 million unit sales in only its first 3 weeks. The original brand emphasizes three aspects of the ingredients (gu in Japanese)-the superior taste, size and volume of helpings. The lineup features instant noodles, miso soup, cup soup and other items.Expect to see more enticing new product releases in the future.
Sales of soft drinks, ice cream and other product groupings at existing stores rose year on year, buoyed by a spell of warm weather in Japan.
On April 1, Lawson introduced DVD stands in all stores. April DVD sales were robust, with a strong lineup featuring titles such as Matrix Revolutions and Kill Bill. DVD orders and sales of Suiyoo Doo Deshoo through Loppi multimedia terminals were also brisk, continuing the momentum from last month.
Lawson announced its full-year operating results for the year ended February 29, 2004 on Wednesday, April 14. The president's message and related results information can be viewed on this website.
