Total sales increased 2.6% year on year to 114,143 million yen, while existing store sales decreased 1.5%. Average daily sales per store were 488,000 yen, and the average amount spent per customer was the same as a year ago at 580 yen. The average number of customers per store per day was 838, down 1.6% year on year.

Existing store sales fell short of the level a year ago for a number of reasons, including strong sales of cold noodles and soft drinks last September due to a long Indian summer, as well as a number of major typhoons at the start and end of September this year. However, the Hokkaido and Tohoku regions, which were relatively unaffected by the weather, posted healthy results.

Main dish sales struggled, partly due to heavy rain during weekends and on public holidays in September. LAWSON aims to turn sales around in October by reshuffling its lineup of established products.

The fast-food category continued to post strong sales, reflecting the early launch of oden (a kind of Japanese hotchpotch or stew) and Chinese steamed buns, as well as the benefits of promotional activities.

In October, LAWSON started accepting orders for printed New Year's greeting cards, Christmas cakes and winter gifts. LAWSON has also started selling advance tickets to Howl's Moving Castle, directed by Hayao Miyazaki, as well as related merchandise through Loppi multimedia terminals.

LAWSON is scheduled to announce its interim results for the fiscal year ending February 28, 2005 on Wednesday, October 13. The earnings release and supplementary materials will be posted on this website as soon as they become available.
