Total sales for May 2006 edged up 0.1% year on year, to 117,283 million yen. Existing store sales declined 3.5% and average daily sales per store were 462,000 yen. The average amount spent per customer was 577 yen, down 0.8%, and the average number of customers per store per day dropped 2.7% to 798.
Although there was a year-on-year decline in existing store markups, an important performance indicator for LAWSON, the percentage decline was less than that of existing store sales.
The discontinuation of Highway Card sales brought down monthly sales by more than 1%.
By area, sales were strong in Kanto and other urban areas, but were sluggish in Chugoku and Shikoku.
In the rice dishes category, LAWSON launched Super Shrimp Tenju (500 yen) and Juicy Tamago Chicken Rice (420 yen), those products have sold in the past and became a big hit. Despite these and other product launches, there was no major change in the sales trend from the previous month.
Sales in the cooked noodles category were higher than a year earlier, reflecting the benefits of a promotion for cold noodles run from May 23 to May 29, 2006.
Fast food category sales remained strong, posting double-digit growth on the back of new product launches and promotions.
The dessert category posted strong sales, as it did in April.
In June, LAWSON will extend sales promotion initiatives launched in May on a larger scale than similar initiatives in the previous year, with the priority goal of increasing the number of customers. Centered on LAWSON Fair, which kicked off on June 6, these initiatives are designed to lift LAWSON's performance from the summer months onward.
As of May 31, 2006, in addition to our nationwide network of regular LAWSON stores, we had 59 NATURAL LAWSON and 40 LAWSON STORE100 stores.
LAWSON held its 31st Ordinary Annual General Meeting of Shareholders on May 26. A streamed video of the meeting is available on our web site (Japanese only) along with details of the resolutions approved by shareholders.
LAWSON plans to announce its business results for the first quarter of the current fiscal year on July 4. The flash report and other related information would be posted on this web site.
