Total sales for June 2008 were 129,959 million yen, up 6.8% year on year. Existing store sales increased 5.1% and average daily sales per store were 517,000 yen. The average amount spent per customer was 578 yen, up 1.4%, and the average number of customers per store per day was 885, up 3.6%.
Despite the negative impact from inclement weather due to the early onset of the rainy season, sales were strong in western Japan.
In the rice dishes category, last month's positive trend continued with existing store sales on a par with the previous year. This was the result in part of firm sales of Yaki Shake Wafu Makunouchi, rice balls made with Niigata Koshihikari rice and other core products.
In the fast food category, sales increased year on year on the back of strong sales of Shouyu Ramen Flavored Karaage-kun (crispy Japanese-style fried chicken). Available only for a limited time, this product was launched as part of a tie-up campaign to coincide with the release of the new Naruto Shippuuden movie. Furthermore, sales of confectionery products, centered on those eligible for this campaign, also performed strongly.
In desserts, bakery and other categories, existing store sales continued to improve year on year.
In July, LAWSON will look to widen the customer base by strengthening merchandise assortments matched to individual store locations. As a core part of these efforts, LAWSON will be running the Miffy Goods Present Campaign through to September 1.
As of June 30, 2008, in addition to our nationwide network of regular LAWSON stores, we had 91 NATURAL LAWSON and 72 LAWSON STORE100 stores.
LAWSON announced its business results for the first quarter of the current fiscal year on Thursday, July 3. The earnings release and supplementary materials can be found on this web site.
