Total sales at all stores in October 2013 amounted to 172,585 million yen, 100.3% of the same period last year. Consolidated net sales of existing stores were 98.6% of the same period last year and non-consolidated net sales of existing stores were 99.2% of the same period last year. Average daily sales per store (all stores) amounted to 526 thousand yen. The average number of customers per store (existing stores) was 878, 97.0% of the same period last year. The average spending per customer (existing stores) was 570 yen, 101.6% of the same period last year.

In October, consolidated net sales of existing stores decreased year on year. In addition to the trend of declining sales of cigarettes, weather conditions such as heavy rain caused by an autumnal rain front and several typhoons since September had negative impact on sales. However, gross profit margin of total sales of existing stores improved in line with our estimate, due to more emphasis on value-added products and robust sales of over-the-counter fast food category with high gross profit margin.

Existing store sales by merchandise category were as follows:

Sales of over-the-counter fast food category significantly exceeded the amount in the previous year, due to favorable sales of in-store prepared foods, freshly-brewed coffee, MACHI café and Chinese buns. The new menu of this category, “Ohgon-Chicken” (tender and juicy fried chicken with a golden, crispy crust) was launched in the last week of October. We have seen strong sales of this item, and the initial sales amount of the first week achieved around five million pieces.

Sales of sandwiches and other chilled bakery items significantly exceeded the amount in the previous year, led by sales of new products such as wheat bran sandwich developed for health-conscious customers.

The delicatessen category exceeded the previous year’s amount. In particular, prepared food categories recorded significant year-on-year growth led by expansion of the customer base led by strategy targeting female and senior customers.

Sales of daily delivered foods, condiments, canned/bottled foods, and frozen meals exceeded the amount in the previous year. Sales in these categories increased in line with the expansion of female and senior customer base.

The ice cream sales were higher than a year earlier, as the average temperature in October was higher than the usual year.

Sales of cigarettes were slightly better than the year-on-year trend in the last month. This negatively impacted net sales of existing stores by a little more than 1.5% points year on year.

As of October 31, 2013, the Lawson Group had 11,497 stores in Japan, including 107 NATURAL LAWSON stores and 1,209 LAWSON STORE100 stores.

Existing store sales of Ninety-nine Plus, Inc. amounted to 93.9% of the same period last year (number of customers: 92.6%; spending per customer: 101.4%). In October, Ninety-nine Plus, Inc. opened 3 stores and closed 2 stores.

Lawson is promoting "The Autumn Rirrakuma Fair," from September 3, 2013 to November 18, 2013.
